Luke 24:36b-49 – Jesus appears to the disciples.
English Translation by Paul I. Burrow
Jesus presents himself in our midst; when the circumstances of life fill us with sadness, doubts, incredulity, etc. These keep us from feeling and having the peace of Christ and thus it is difficult to be his witnesses. We couldn’t spread the good news when we don’t have peace in our hearts. This is why the gospel of Luke describes the unexpected encounter between Jesus and his disciples after the resurrection. Where all had seemed to be at an end, God’s plan and the redeeming work of Jesus had not concluded. The resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion brings something more and it is to search out his own and to entrust to them a mission that even to this day continues in force for all believers. It is to be and to make representatives, his witnesses, here and now and to carry the Good News of salvation. “You are my witnesses.”
To be a witness is a difficult commendation after being present at the violent death and being full of fear and terror because the disciple were overwhelmed confusion and were indeed terrified. Throughout this entire scene, the disciples remain quiet, in total silence, and it Jesus who, knowing their hearts, goes to restore their faith. This scene is for me the life vest that arrives at the right moment for the disciples. Because it gives them new air, he presents himself before them to make them know that they are not alone, it filles them with hope and peace. These are the first words that they are to hear about the Resurrected One: “Peace be with you.” Sometimes we forget the living presence of Jesus, having the strength of a living Christ and one who lives among us who sends us to take peace to the world and make witnesses of Jesus of all needy people.
Another very important point is the way in which Jesus presents himself awakening their faith. Jesus shows his hand and his feet so they can see the wounds from crucifixion. He wants that they always have before their eyes his love given even unto death. He is not a ghost. “I am here in person.” The same person that they had known and loved through the roads of Galilee, he was the same with whom they had eaten before, he was the one with whom gone around preaching, healing, exhorting the people that followed him. Jesus makes himself known in a believable way so that the disciple were sure that he was alive. And so that they would discover by themselves the hands with which he blessed the sick and caressed the children, those feet tired of walking to the encounter with the most forgotten; to discover their wounds and his passion. It is that Jesus who now lives, resurrected by the Father.
In spite of seeing them full of fear and doubts, Jesus believed en his disciples. He asks that they not move to Jerusalem until they have been invested with power from on high.
Concluding this story of Jesus’ appearance to his disciples, I believe that here is related the biggest problem of the church in general in all times. It has been and is the lack of people to be “witnesses” who want to preach the repentance and forgiveness of sins and taking the message of the good news of salves and witnessing that Christ lives; that he continues healing, forgiving, continues waiting with his love for every person that desires to be reconciled with him and healed of the wounds in his/her heart to become free from all tethers. The question is: Do you want to be a witness of Jesus? The invitation is for you who have doubts, fears, pain, sadness, and a lack of faith and love; who has a great savior who always accompanies you and even in difficult moments when you think all is finished and there is nothing more to do, Jesus continues to be there at your side and continues inviting you to be his “witness” so that we can give testimony regarding his marvels and above all his living Word. Amen.

Amen.
