March 13, 2022 – 2nd Sunday of Lent
Luke 13:31-33
This story reminds me of Christians that in Islamic countries and experience persecution, suffering incarceration and mistreatment to defend the faith in Jesus Christ. So, we find Jesus receiving threats so that he won’t be able to carry out the perfect plan of God. But Jesus is not worried by the threat from Herod; he even calls him a fox.
“32 Go and tell that fox for me, ‘Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work.”
Jesus is very determined to carry out the will of God. Whatever plan the Pharisees and Herod have for Jesus will fail because the plans of Jesus and of God cannot be broken by anyone. And he is determined to fulfill the mission that God the Father has entrusted to him even in opposition to Herod and those in power.
33“Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.”
No prophet dies if he/she is not fighting for what God has put on his/her heart. And Jesus knew that he had to die in Jerusalem so that the will of God could be fulfilled. We might think that we should do so much to fulfill the mission that God has entrusted to us. Nowadays in our country we don’t have persecution because of faith, but we are indeed criticized, marginalized, excluded for different reasons. At that point, I think we are experiencing the suffering and pain as in the times of Jesus.
34“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”
Upon hearing these words from Jesus one can feel the immense pain and sadness in his heart and therefore en God’s heart. Jerusalem is the sacred city, the city of David, the city of God. Jerusalem is where praises were sung in the temple and it was the destination of Jewish pilgrims. Nevertheless, Jesus says “that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it.” This is the lament of Jesus, but it is also the lament of God, the result of a long and frustrating history with Jerusalem.
Perhaps we can imagine the broken heart of Jesus – imagining how when a father or mother wants to protect his or her children because he/she does not want to see them fail – it hurts greatly to see them suffer. And we want to be that hen that gathers her chicks under her wing so that they are safe. That same feeling of love is what Jesus and God have for us their children and therefore they offer us divine protection which we should accept and embrace in our hearts.
Are we ready to receive a home under the wings of the Most High? We enjoy having a roof to protect when things are going badly – when our world disintegrates. Are we ready to continue in the face of adversity? Jesus confronted the danger from Herod and the religious leaders, but they couldn’t impede his path. Today, Christians in China, India, Vietnam, and many Islamic countries are confronted with persecution, and we admire the force of their faith. And, in the same way, each one of us should make the effort to continue walking with Jesus Christ. Amen.

“No es posible que un profeta muera fuera de Jerusalén”

Lk 13:31-33
Esta historia me hace recordar a los cristianos que están en países islámicos y se enfrentan con la persecución, exponiéndose a ser encarcelados y maltratados por defender la fe en Jesucristo, así como se encontraba Jesús recibiendo amenazas para que no llevará a cabo el plan perfecto de Dios. Pero Jesus no está preocupado por la amenaza de Herodes, he incluso lo llama de una manera ofensiva zorro.
“32Y les dijo: Id, y decid a aquella zorra: He aquí, echo fuera demonios y hago curaciones hoy y mañana, y al tercer día termino mi obra.” Jesús está muy determinado para llevar a cabo la voluntad de Dios, Cualquier plan que tengan los fariseos y Herodes para Jesús fallará porque los planes de Jesús y de Dios nadie los puede quebrantar, y él está determinado en cumplir con la misión que Dios Padre le ha encomendado aun en contra de Herodes y de los gobernantes.
“33Sin embargo, es necesario que hoy y mañana y pasado mañana siga mi camino; porque no es posible que un profeta muera fuera de Jerusalén”. Ningún profeta muere si no es peleando por lo que Dios le ha puesto en su corazón, y él sabía que tenía que morir en Jerusalén para que se cumpliera la voluntad de Dios. Nosotros podríamos pensar que tanto debemos de hacer por cumplir con la misión que se nos ha encomendado, hoy en día en nuestro país no tendremos persecución por la fe, pero si somos criticados, marginados, excluidos por diferentes razones, entonces creo que estamos experimentando sufrimiento y dolor como en los tiempos de Jesus.
34¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas, y apedreas a los que te son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos, como la gallina a sus polluelos debajo de sus alas, y no quisiste!. Al escuchar estas palabras de parte de Jesus se puede sentir el inmenso dolor y tristeza en su corazón y por ende en el corazón de Dios. Jerusalén es la Ciudad Sagrada, la Ciudad de David, la ciudad de Dios. Jerusalén es donde se alaba en el templo y destino de peregrinación judía. Sin embargo Jesús dice “que matas á los profetas, y apedreas á los que son enviados a ti. Es el lamento de Jesús, pero también es el lamento de Dios, resultado de una larga y frustrada historia con Jerusalén.
Quizá podemos imaginar mejor el corazón roto de Jesús imaginándonos como cuando un padre o una madre quiere proteger a sus hijos porque no les quiere ver fracasar, porque duele mucho verlos sufrir, y queremos ser como esa gallina que arropa a sus pollitos con su plumaje, para que estén a salvo, ese mismo sentimiento de amor es el de Jesus y el de Dios para nosotros sus hijos y por eso nos ofrecen su protección divina a la cual debemos de aceptar y abrazar en nuestros corazones.
Estamos dispuestos a recibir un hogar bajo las alas del Altísimo? Gozamos de tener un techo para protegernos cuando las cosas van mal cuando nuestro mundo se deshace ¿Estamos dispuestos a seguir frente a la adversidad? Jesús confrontó el peligro de Herodes y de líderes religiosos, pero ellos no lograron impedirle el camino. Hoy, cristianos en China, India, Vietnam, y muchos países islámicos se enfrentan con la persecución, y admiramos la fuerza de su fe, así como cada uno de nosotros que nos esforzamos por seguir caminando con Jesucristo. Amen.
