October 1, 2023, 18th Sunday After Pentecost, World Communion Sunday
Ex 17:1-7, Ps 78:1-4, 12:16, Phil 2:1-13, Matt 21:23-32.
The epistle lesson for World Communion Sunday is Philippians 2:1-13, an appropriate message for our multi-fractured Church as we gather around the Lord’s Table. The Philippians were dealing with some disagreements – probably not about the best manner for serving communion or whether the worship music should be contemporary or traditional; probably not regarding how to deal with differences in sexual orientation. However, this primarily Gentile congregation was arguing about something so divisive that the Apostle Paul wrote a pastoral letter from prison, encouraging them to get along. Some commentators suggest that controversy may have been over circumcision, with some Philippians espousing a righteousness based on the law, which differed from Paul’s own view of righteousness based on Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.
In Philippians 2:5 Paul gets to the heart of the matter: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” The verses which follow (likely an early hymn of the Church) lay out this central truth: Christ Jesus, “though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross.” (Phil 2:6-8) Our United Methodist denomination has been slowly and painfully moving through our divisions over human sexuality. People on both ends of the spectrum of beliefs on this topic have felt compelled to leave the UMC to find places where they felt they could more fully live out their faith. We can’t change the past, but perhaps we who remain can refocus our ministry on our reason for being – to reflect the mind of Jesus Christ.
In a 2017 sermon using this text, retired Bishop William Willimon put it this way. “There’s a lot we don’t know about Christ. But one thing we know for sure is that he brought people together. He begins his ministry by assembling twelve disciples; people who had nothing in common with one another except that Christ had called them to walk with him. Jesus got into trouble for uniting despairing sinners and presumptuous saints. He saves us by assembling us, by putting us in a group, by teaching us to call those whom the world regard as strangers or enemies as ‘sister’, ‘brother.’ Anybody who says, ‘Love one another…bless those who persecute you…pray for your enemies’ has got to be somebody prejudiced toward unity, reconciliation, union, communion, community.” Willimon goes on to say, “Paul encourages the church to focus on our originating cause, our great mission – to allow Jesus Christ to gather us, to overcome our boundaries and divisions and to be one in Jesus Christ. In other words, to show the world what Jesus can do.”[i]
In my thirty-three years under appointment to Iowa United Methodist congregations, I felt blessed to serve in congregations which did not necessarily all “think alike,” but as John Wesley suggested in his sermon “A Catholic Spirit” learned how to “love alike.” My fondest memories will always be the times when those churches reached out beyond their walls to share the love of Christ. For example, at my husband Bob’s suggestion, tiny Graves United Methodist Church in Waterloo, Iowa began a weekly free “Soup and Salad Supper” during the farm crisis of the 1980’s. Waterloo was hard hit by that crisis, with many struggling to make ends meet. The good folks at Graves UMC did not all agree on everything about faith and practice, but quickly said, “We can’t do much, but we can cook!” Soon they were feeding over 100 people a week during Lent and Advent, and the church was never more alive!
It is not surprising that the ancient hymn from Philippians has appeared modern hymnody, like “All Praise to Thee” (UMH 166). Perhaps as your congregation gathers at the Lord’s Table on World Communion Sunday, you could use these words from verse 3: “Let this mind be in us which was in thee, who was a servant that we might be free, humbling thyself, to death on Calvary. Alleluia! Alleluia!” May it be so. Amen

La lectura de la epístola para el Domingo Mundial de la Santa Comunión es Filipenses 2:1-13, un mensaje apropiado para nuestra iglesia multifacética como nos reunimos alrededor de la Mesa del Señor. Los filipenses trataban con algunos desacuerdos – probablemente no acerca de la manera mejor de servir la comunión ni si la música del culto debe ser contemporánea o tradicional; probablemente no sobre cómo tratar con diferencias en orientación sexual. Sin embargo, esta congregación mayormente gentil estaba discutiendo sobre algo tan divisivo que el Apóstol Pablo escribió una carta pastoral de la prisión, animándoles que se lleven bien. Algunos escritores sugieren que es posible que la controversia haya sido sobre la circuncisión, con algunos filipenses apoyando una rectitud basada en la ley, la cual difirió del punto de vista de Pablo sobre la rectitud basada en la crucifixión y la resurrección de Cristo.
En Filipenses 2:5 Pablo llega al corazón del asunto: “Haya, pues, en vosotros este sentir que hubo también en Cristo Jesús.” Los versículos que siguen (probablemente un himno primitivo del la Iglesia) exponen esta verdad central: Cristo Jesús, “siendo en forma de Dios, no estimó el ser igual a Dios como cosa a que aferrarse, sino que se despojó a sí mismo, tomó la forma de siervo y se hizo semejante a los hombres. Mas aún, hallándose en la condición de hombre, se humilló a sí mismo, haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz.” (Fil. 2:6-8) Nuestra denominación metodista unida has estado moviendo lentamente y dolorosamente por nuestras divisiones sobre la sexualidad humana. Personas de ambos lados del espectro de creencias sobre este tema se han sentido obligadas salir de la IMU para lugares donde sentían que podían vivir llenamente su fe. No podemos cambiar el pasado, pero quizás nosotros que nos quedamos podemos reenfocar nuestro ministerio en nuestra razón por ser – reflejar la mentar de Jesucristo.
En un sermón de 2017 usando este texto, el Obispo jubilado William Willimon lo expresó así. “Hay mucho que no sabemos acerca de Cristo. Pero una cosa que sabemos por seguro es que juntó a personas. Comienza su ministerio por reunir a doce discípulos; personas que no tenían nada en común uno con el otro sino que Cristo los había llamado a caminar con él. Jesús se metió en problemas por unir a pecadores desesperanzados con santos insolentes. Nos salva por reunirnos, por ponernos en un grupo, por enseñarnos a llamar “hermana” o “hermano” a los que el mundo considera como forasteros o enemigos. Quien dice, ‘Ámense unos a otros . . . bendice a los que te persiguen . . . ora por tus enemigos’ tiene que ser alguien que es parcial a la unida, la reconciliación, la unión, la comunión, la comunidad.” Willimon sigue diciendo, “Pablo anima a la iglesia que se enfoque en nuestra causa que nos dio nuestro origen, nuestra gran misión – deja que Jesucristo nos reúna, que superemos nuestras fronteras y divisiones y que seamos uno en Jesucristo. En otras palabras, mostrar al mundo lo que puede hacer Jesús.”1
En mis treinta y tres años bajo nombramiento a congregaciones metodistas unidas en Iowa, me sentía bendecida servir en congregaciones en que todos no necesariamente “pensaron igual,” sino que como sugirió John Wesley en su sermón “Un Espíritu Católico” aprendieron a “amar igual.” Mis memorias más cariñosas siempre serán las veces cuando aquellas iglesias alcanzaron más allá de sus paredes para compartir el amor de Cristo. Por ejemplo, a la sugerencia de mi esposo Bob, la pequeñita iglesia Graves IMU en Waterloo, Iowa comenzó una “Comida Semanal de Sopa y Ensalada” gratis durante la crisis de las granjas de los 1980. Waterloo sufrió mucho a causa de esa crisis, con muchos luchando de llegar a fin de mes. Las buenas personas de Graves IMU no estaban de acuerdo sobre todo acerca de fe y práctica, pero rápidamente dijeron, “¡No podemos hacer mucho, pero podemos cocinar!” Pronto alimentaban a más de 100 personas cada semana durante la Cuaresma y el Adviento, ¡y jamás estaba más viva la iglesia!
No es sorprendente que el himno antiguo de Filipenses ha aparecido en himnos modernos, como “Toda Alabanza a Ti [All Praise to Thee]” (#166 en el Himnario Metodista Unido en inglés – no ha sido traducido al español). Quizás como su congregación se reúne alrededor de la Mesa del Señor el Domingo Mundial de la Santa Comunión, podría usar estas palabras de estrofa 3: “Que sea en nosotros esta mente que estaba en ti, quien era siervo para que pudiéramos ser libres, humillándote, hasta la muerte en Calvario. ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya!” Que sea así. Amén.
