Thursday April 1, 2021 – Holy/Maundy Thursday

Celebrating Holy Communion has been quite challenging during the pandemic. I am very grateful to my Bishop who gave permission to celebrate communion over the Internet. However, I must say I was quite sad not to be able to celebrate communion with my parishioners in Nursing Homes before I retired. I know many pastors are looking forward to being able to celebrate communion in person once again on Maundy Thursday. Some have been asking on Facebook how they can make it special. Should they stretch out the celebration so that people can truly appreciate it? Should the whole service be the long liturgy for celebrating the sacrament? The questions are as plentiful as the number of pastors.
However, as I considered once again the Scriptures for Holy Thursday, it struck me that neither the Last Supper nor the Passover Meal that was being observed were meals that were eaten slowly or in luxury. “This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the Passover of the LORD” (Ex. 12:11). Today we might say – “Grab a sandwich and eat it standing up. There’s no time to spare.” I am sure that Jesus would have liked to have taken his time in sharing the Last Supper with his disciples, but he did have that luxury.
Even though we would like to take our time, this is a meal that is eaten on the run. And really, in a “fast food society” that shouldn’t be a surprise. I remember a number of years ago now when my friend Jay and I were attending the Advanced Course of Study at Duke in North Carolina. We had gotten rooms in an extended stay hotel about 10 miles from the campus, and so each day we got to see what others were doing as we drove into Durham. We were greeted by quite a variety of sights – people combed their hair, put on make-up, put on a tie – but more than anything else, they ate their breakfasts. I remember one cool summer morning we had the windows open and we had stopped at a stoplight. Next to us was a man who was gobbling down a breakfast sandwich. And from the far lane someone yelled: “Eat your breakfast at home!!” And, while it might have been safer to have done that, there is a long tradition of eating on the run.
But, it is not the length of time that is taken to celebrate communion. The sacrament itself is holy. Jesus promised to be present in a special way when we celebrate communion, and many have experienced (and continue to experience) that special presence. I think what is most important for us to remember this year as we come to the Lord’s Table is that this is a meal that transforms us. There is a reason that Jesus told his Disciples: “Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Cor. 11:24b).
I recall many years ago, before I went into the ministry, our church in Oskaloosa was celebrating communion. The tradition at the time was to have people exit either to the side aisles, walk to the back of the church and then come down the central aisle to receive the elements at the communion rail. There were two ladies, who I understand had been good friends decades before, but something had happened and they were now bitter enemies. They always made sure that one sat on one side of the sanctuary while the other sat on the opposite side. This day, when the two ladies came from different directions, they ended up walking down the central aisle together. I do not know if anything was said, but when they reach the front of the church, one lady took the arm of the other and they knelt at the communion rail together. When they arose, one lady went and got her purse from the pew and they went and sat together for the first time in decades.
Holy Communion is truly a Supper of Transformation. We do not need to do anything ourselves to make it special. When we “do this in remembrance of me” Christ’s special presence sanctifies all that we do. May you be blessed this Holy Thursday as you celebrate Holy Communion.

El celebrar la Santa Comunión ha sido muy desafiante durante la pandemia. Estoy muy agradecido a mi obispa quien dio permiso para celebrar la comunión sobre el Internet. Sin embargo, tengo que decir que estaba muy triste no poder celebrar la comunión con mis parroquianos en residencias de ancianos antes de jubilarme. Conozco a muchos pastores que anticipan poder celebrar la comunión en persona una vez más el Jueves Santo. Algunos han estado preguntando en Facebook cómo puede hacerlo especial. ¿Deben extender la celebración para que la gente pueda apreciarla verdaderamente? ¿Debe ser todo el servicio la liturgia larga para celebrar el sacramento? Las preguntas son tan abundantes como el número de pastores.
Sin embargo, como meditaba sobre las Escrituras para el Jueves Santo, se me ocurrió que ni la Última Cena ni la Comida de la Pascua Judía que se observó eran comidas que se comieron lentamente o en lujo. “Lo habéis de comer así: ceñidos con un cinto, con vuestros pies calzados y con el bastón en la mano; y lo comeréis apresuradamente. Es la Pascua de Jehová” (Éx. 12:11). Hoy diríamos – “Que agarren un sandwich y que lo coman de pie. No hay tiempo de sobra.” Estoy seguro de que a Jesús le habría gustado haber tomado tiempo en compartir la Última Cena con sus Discípulos, pero no tuvo ese lujo.
Aunque nos gustaría tomar nuestro tiempo, ésta es una comida se come con prisa. Y de verdad, en una “sociedad de comida rápida” eso no debe ser sorpresa. Recuerdo hace muchos años ahora cuando mi amigo Jay y yo estábamos asistiendo al Curso de Estudio Avanzado en la Universidad de Duke en Carolina del Norte. Tuvimos habitaciones en un hotel de estancia extendida unas 10 millas del campus, y por eso cada tuvimos la oportunidad de observar lo que hacían otros como manejábamos a Durham. Vimos una buena variedad de cosas – personas peinando el pelo, maquillándose, poniéndose una corbata – pero más que nada, comían sus desayunos. Recuero una mañana fresca de verano tuvimos abiertas las ventanillas y nos habíamos parado para un semáforo. Al lado de nosotros había un hombre engullendo un sandwich de desayuno. Y del carril lejos alguien gritó: “¡Coma su desayuno en casa!” Y, mientras que es bien posible que habría sido más seguro hacerlo así, hay una tradición larga de comer nuestra comida con prisa.
Pero, no es el tiempo que se usa para celebrar la comunión. El sacramento mismo es sagrado. Jesús prometió estar presente en una manera especial cuando celebramos la Santa Comunión, y muchos han experimentado (y siguen experimentando) esa presencia especial. Creo que lo que es más importante que recordemos este año como venimos a la mesa del Señor es que ésta es una comida que nos transforma. Hay razón por qué Jesús les dijo a sus Discípulos: “haced esto en memoria de mí” (1 Cor. 11:24b).
Recuerdo hace muchos años, antes de que me entré en el ministerio, nuestra iglesia en Oskaloosa celebraba la comunión. La tradición entonces era que la gente saliera de los bancos a los pasillos al lado, y entonces que caminaran hacia la parte trasera de la iglesia y entonces procesar por el pasillo central para recibir los elementos en la barra de comunión. Había dos mujeres, quienes comprendo que habían sido muy buenas amigas hace décadas, pero algo había ocurrido y ahora eran enemigos acérrimos. Siempre aseguraban que una se sentaba en lado del santuario mientras que la otra se sentaba en el lado opuesto. Este día, cuando las dos mujeres vinieron de diferentes direcciones, ocurrió que se encontraron juntos en el pasillo central, y tuvieron que procesar por todo ese pasillo. No sé si se dijeron algo o no, pero cuando llegaron a la parte delantera de la iglesia, una mujer tomó el brazo de la otra y se arrodillaron en la barra de comunión juntas. Cuando se levantaron, una mujer fue a su banco, tomó su bolso y juntas se fueron al otro banco y se sentaron juntas por la primera vez en décadas.
La Santa Comunión verdaderamente es una Cena de Transformación. No necesitamos hacer nada nosotros mismos para hacerla especial. Cuando hacemos “esto en memoria de mí” la presencia especial de Cristo santifica todo lo que hacemos. Que Ud. sea bendecido este Jueves Santo como celebre la Santa Comunión.
