Self care
Good self care amid a crisis includes attention to body, mind and soul. (Photo by Madison Lavern / Unsplash)
Over the past year, Jennifer R. Farmer, host of United Methodist Women’s “FaithTalks” podcast, says she has thought a lot about self-care and what the Bible says about personal ecology, she writes in an email.
“The passage of Scripture in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 is sobering: ‘Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So, glorify God in your body.’
“When I read these texts, I must ask myself if I am treating my body as though the Holy Spirit resides within it? Do I regularly remember that I was bought with a price? And what would it look like to treat my body in this way?”
Jennifer says she’ll explore “these questions and more” on a live recording of the Faith Talks podcast on Thursday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m. ET with guests:
- Ghylian Bell, founder and director of the Urban Yoga Foundation
- Valencia McClure, certified aromatherapist and founder of The Artistry of Essential Oils
- Nora Cunningham, UMW executive for spiritual growth
Virtual advocacy event open for registration
Registration is open for the virtual Ecumenical Advocacy Days conference April 18-21, 2021. The event, in which many United Methodists participate, is an annual gathering for Christian social justice advocates to learn, worship, and speak to pressing issues. The conference ends with an opportunity to meet (virtually) with participants’ members of Congress, according to an email from Creation Justice Ministries, an ecumenical climate care organization with roots in the National Council of Churches.
Creation Justice Ministries will host two workshops:
- Healthy Watersheds, Healthy People
- The Church's Role in Environmental Justice
In addition to workshops there are many more seminars that focus on different areas of environmental justice, resilience, mitigation, and many intersections of the worldwide climate crisis, writes Annika Harley, policy & program associate for Creation Justice Ministries. Register here.
