"Total depravity" is central to Wesleyan theology

Wesley's sermon, "Original Sin," clearly supports the Reformed understanding of the total depravity of humanity and, hence, our need for God's grace to lift us out of our sinful condition. He viewed that doctrine not as a matter of sectarian distinction but as universal to a Christian worldview. In that sermon, he asserts, "Is it by nature filled with all manner of evil? Is he void of all good? Is he wholly fallen? Is his soul totally corrupted? Or, to come back to the text, 'every imagination of the thoughts of his heart evil continually?' Allow this, and you are so far a Christian. Deny it, and you are but a heathen still." (III.2)
