More than half of some 380 respondents to a United Methodist Insight straw poll think that United Methodist bishops should suspend penalties for clergy who perform same-sex marriage now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled marriage equality is the law of the land.
However, some two-thirds of respondents doubt that the 2016 General Conference will remove the UMC's anti-LGBT policies to conform with civil law.
Respondents were almost evenly divided over whether United Methodist congregations should gay and lesbian couples to be married in their churches despite the denomination's ban against same-sex weddings being held on UMC properties.
