As the pandemic rages and robs so many people of an earthly tomorrow, one trait it cannot steal away from a person is Hope. Hope is a candle providing us a light to guide our way through the darkness the coronavirus has brought upon the world. Victor Frankl, a Jewish psychiatrist and survivor of Auschwitz, once said, many people in the hospital hung on to the idea they would be home by Christmas. When that didn’t happen, a number of them died. Why? They lost their will to live, because they lost hope. In Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl reminds us, “There is no guarantee that what you hope for will happen.”
Though many people believe it is, hope is not a wish list, expecting God or another person to give us what we expect. What God promises is fulfilled in God’s time. Our task is to remain steadfastly faithful and hopeful. If and when we lose patience or are hanging on by a thread, we need to remember Israel’s story. Because of its unfaithfulness, Israel was wiped out as a country by the Babylonians in 587 B.C. Israelites hoped that in God’s time they would have a homeland once again. Their unedited story of God’s promise was passed down from generation to another until 1948 when the State of Israel was declared. “Our task is to find meaningfulness in our living. The human life is meaningful because it is story. Within story, we must see we have a purpose larger than ourselves. How our story ends matters.”(Atul Gawande, Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Matters in the End.)
In a time such as this, the words of Yahweh found in Isaiah 40 are being acted upon. Doctors, nurses, pastors, scientists, mental health professionals, family members, friends and even strangers are answering the call of our Creator to, “Comfort my people...”. They, and all of us, have been called to be the ‘boots on the ground’ for those who suffer and those who grieve through the darkness of the pandemic. Together, we all take our light from the one who has said, “I am the light of the world.”
When so much misinformation by so-called leaders has been thrown around regarding the virus and if followed leads us deeper into the darkness, it is left to us to hear and practice the hard truth of what exactly we need to do for this pandemic to wither. Throughout our journey, the prophets of old, the gospel writers, and the writers of the epistles call us to be hopeful, faithful, to love one another, and like our Master is for us, we must be a light for others as we journey through this darkness.

Como se propaga la pandemia y roba a tantas personas de una mañana terrenal, un rasgo que no puede robar de una persona es la Esperanza. La esperanza es una vela proveyéndonos una luz para guiar nuestro camino por las tinieblas que ha traído al mundo la pandemia. Victor Fankl, un psiquiatra y superviviente de Auschwitz, dijo una vez, muchas personas en el hospital mantenían la idea que estarían en casa para las Navidades. Cuando eso no ocurrió, un número de ellos murieron. ¿Por qué? Perdieron su voluntad de vivir, porque perdieron la esperanza. En La Búsqueda del Hombre para Significado [Man’s Search for Meaning] nos acuerda, “No garantía que lo que esperas ocurrirá.
Aunque muchas personas creen que lo es, la esperanza no es una lista de deseos, esperando que Dios o otra personas nos dé lo que esperamos. Lo que Dios promete es cumplido en el tiempo de Dios. Nuestra tarea es quedarnos fieles y optimistas firmemente. Si y cuando perdemos paciencia o pendemos un hilo, necesitamos acordarnos de la historia de Israel. A causa de su infidelidad, Israel fue barrido como país por los babilonios en 587 A.C. Los israelitas esperaban que en el tiempo de Dios tendrían una patria una vez más. Su historia sin editar de la promesa de Dios fue legada de una generación a otra hasta 1948 cuando fue declarado el Estado de Israel. “Nuestra tarea es encontrar significado en nuestras vidas. La vida humana tiene significado porque es historia. Dentro de la historia, hemos de ver que tenemos un propósito más grande que nosotros mismos. En tal tiempo como éste, las palabras de Yahweh encontradas en Isaías 40 son representadas y puestas en acción. Médicos, enfermeras, pastores, científicos, profesionales de salud mental, miembros de familias, amigos y aún extranjeros responden al llamado de nuestro Creador – “Consolad a mi pueblo . . .” Ellos, y todos de nosotros, hemos sido llamados a ser “los soldados en tierra enemiga” para los que sufren y para los que lamentan por las tinieblas de la pandemia. Juntos, todos tomamos luz de él que ha dicho, “Soy la luz del mundo.” Cuando tanta desinformación por los llamados líderes ha sido barajada sobre el virus y si seguida nos guía más profundamente a las tinieblas. Somos nosotros los que oímos y practicamos la verdad difícil de lo que necesitamos hacer exactamente para que esta pandemia se muera. Durante nuestra peregrinación, los profetas del pasado, los escritores de los evangelios, y los escritores de las Epístolas nos llaman a ser optimistas, fieles, a amarnos unos a otros, como nuestro Maestro es para nosotros, hemos de ser una luz para otros como peregrinemos por las tienieblas.
