A UMC parable?

Reading this I'm reminded of the story about the young man who wanted to make a fresh start getting away from all the pressure and decided to join a monastery. He found one which had all members take a vow of silence. Every ten years he would be called into the Abbot's office and could say two words. The man felt that was just what he was looking for and joined. Ten years passed and he had an audience with the Abbot. The Abbot said: "you've been here ten years you can say two words, what would you like to say?" The man replied; "FOOD BAD". The Abbot said; "I've heard that from others, thanks for coming in". Ten more years pass and the man says to the Abbot; "BED HARD". The Abbot replies; "Others have shared that,, thanks for coming in". Another ten years go by , this time the man goes into see the Abbot and says: "NO FRIENDS". The empathetic Abbot responds; "Others have also advised me of that, thanks for coming in". Ten more years go by, the man makes his dicennial trip to the Abbot and says; "I QUIT". The response comes loud and clear; "I'm not surprised; all you have done since you got here is complain!" In I Corinthians 13 the words come through in a very graphic fashion; "LOVE DOES NOT DEMAND IT'S OWN WAY!". I wonder which part of all of the negative energy is building the Kingdom of God? Which part of 'my way or the highway' is edifying?

On One Hand

On one hand separation may seem like a funny joke. On the other hand we see two movements that cannot ever get along. When Progressives are out voted they refuse to accept the will of the majority. And so we have two groups unable to get along. The best outcome seems a no-fault divorce - kindness for all over fighting.

May I humbly explain

May I explain why the Traditional Methodist position cannot compromise on sexuality. From the Traditional position of Methodists, a person living an immoral lifestyle is desperately in need of a Savior. This is because the Bible says such people will not be part of the kingdom of God. So you cannot expect the Traditional Methodist to give up on people in desperate need. They would not be faithful to God if they gave up and let them slip into eternity in need of a Savior. So there is no “wiggle room” to compromise and it would be tragic to do so. That's why separation is the only way forward. The Progressive does not take the Bible at face value. So from that position you can compromise the teachings of the Bible a little bit and no one gets hurt. See how these two positions can never live happily together? A peaceful settlement is the only good way to end years of strife. Both groups going their own way in peace. Let us pray for peace.
