Long story short

Missionaries sent to colonies of European and North American powers of the 19th Century, as well as sent to independent but client states which maintained a sense of political independence while being dominated by Europeans and North Americans like China, were from the beginning an aspect of imperialism and dominance. In countries like Democratic Republic of Congo, membership in a Christian church is a status marker of middle class or above.
