It is CULTURAL, these differences, not merely our Bible interpretations!

“Mabuhay” to the Filipinos who might read this article. You great people gave this Texan my first introduction to a culture quite different than my own, welcomed me, taught me, and made me a very different man than the young sailor who reached your shores…
.
As a result, my life turned to international business and I worked with the cultures of twenty-five different countries over thirty-five years. Many worshiped the same God as me, accepted Jesus as Savior, but had their own cultural rules and mores passed down from thousands of years.
.
This is the key to the problems of the UMC now. Aside from wide differences of opinion of scripture interpretation, peoples live in organized societies, based on historical cultural rules and beliefs. To expect a “worldwide denomination” to not have real conflicts over foreign cultural norms is truly naïve. “Religion” is by no means the only adhesive which holds a society together!
.
So, asking foreign peoples to accept the decayed morality of the West as normal is unfair. In any language, what is meant by the English word “queer” is diametric to what is meant by the word “normal”. For many of us in America, and most of those in Africa and Asia, the two meanings are mutually exclusive and there is no common ground. It is not as much "religious" as it is cultural. We need to understand and accept that and chart our futures accordingly.
