General Conference

I was always under the impression that General Conference is the body (and the only body) that speaks officially for the entire UMC and that the decisions of General Conference were binding for the entire UMC. Was I taught wrong polity and policy?

Remembering the Past

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”.
Spanish-American Philosopher George Santayana, 1863 - 1952

The response of the German United Methodist Church to the Traditional Plan evokes memory in many of us. Martin Niemoller in his oft quoted words spoke of the Nazi’s “Coming To get Jews, Trade Unionists, And Catholics”. We know they came for homosexuals as well.

It is said by many persons that Germany remembers the Holocaust in ways Americans do not remember the slavery, segregation and lynching of Blacks.

The sadness, the tragedy of General Conference 2019 is that it reaffirmed its ban on “The practice of homosexuality” with no memory of the negatives of colonization in Africa, slavery, segregation and lynching of Blacks in ALL of the America’s, and the Holocaust in Germany.

Thanks to the German United Methodist Church, the Western Jurisdiction, UM Churches in the Baltimore-Washington Conference, Churches in New England and elsewhere throughout the world, who declared that “What happened at General Conference 2019 in St. Louis, must stay in St. Louis.”

May United Methodists throughout the world, hear and respond to these New Testament words of Jesus, rather than legislation of a General Conference: “You have heard that it has been said, but I say unto you”.

Too long has the United Methodist Church allowed its obsession to punish the intimate actions of same gender loving persons, while the world burns with unacknowledged memories of past hatreds, that shape the hatreds of today.
