The Special Called Session for General Conference begins next week, February 23 - 26, 2019. Many discussions regarding the role, status, and rights of LGBTQI people in The United Methodist Church have taken place. Decisions will be made on how we will move forward but have we heard from everyone in the church?
Have you thought about these discussions from the lens of race, the international community, or from the lens of our young people?
In a new installment of "Vital Conversations" from the General Commission on Religion and Race, two prominent African American pastors, the Rev. Dr. Vance P. Ross and Rev. Rudy Rasmus, bring additional perspectives to the discussion.
Together they ask, "Are we really following that guy (Jesus)?"
Rev. Rasmus is a pastor, author, and a humanitarian with a passion for outreach to the world’s most challenged communities. He co-pastors St. John’s United Methodist Church in downtown Houston, Texas, with his wife Juanita Rasmus, a church that began with nine existing members in 1992. Today, St. John’s has grown to thousands of members from every social and economic background share the same pews. He attributes the success of the church to a compassionate group of people who have embraced the vision of tearing down the walls of classism, sexism, and racism and building bridges of unconditional love, universal recovery, and unprecedented hope.
Dr. Ross is senior pastor of Central United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga. A sought-after preacher and presenter, Ross co-facilitates a doctor of ministry cohort at United Theological Seminary, teaches the course of study at Candler School of Theology, directs the Convocation for Black United Methodist Pastors, and is a coach for pastors and laity team for the Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century Initiative for the United Methodist Church.
