Why isn't the Bible the authority to which we derive the BOD?

To put it bluntly, Christianity is a monarchal setup. God is king, he is 3 equal but inseparable beings but also one entity that has spoken to us through inspired text. This text set down the rules through the assembly of many books that make up the Bible. The Bible was the authority from which the BOD borrowed to organize the UMC. John Wesley had his Quadralateral that put the word of God first with tradition second which was followed quickly by reason and experience. The BOD survives the test of the Quad and the bible. So if they are correct, what do we do with things that don't survive the test of the truth. The bible says we should cast out wrong beliefs such as Paul wrote about in his letters to the Churches. If his writings were anything to note is that Churchs can go off the rails even if they start out pure in God's teachings.

Unity with Diversity

The Rev. Jeremy Smit, Lead Pastor of First United Church in Seattle, WA has proposed a plan for a future of unity. It's very simple. Make every jurisdiction in the United States a Central Conference. Central Conferences have the authority to change the discipline to fit their local context. All Central Conferences could continue to gather and function as they do today.
Probably one more proposal to allow churches or annual conferences to affiliate with another jurisdiction would be required. (The plan that wasn't discussed at the 2029 Special Called General Conference.)
Of course this would fail to affirm either side as correct. But it would preserve unity, avoid the problems of dividing assets or agencies and allow the global United Methodist Church to remain strong.

It is not General Conference that is dysfunctional

It is leadership that no longer feels they have to live into their vow to abide by its decisions. And our disagreement on that is only one of a myriad of reasons as to why the UMC is coming apart at the seams! I do not have a problem with the progressive stance on sexuality; I have a problem with your lack of integrity.

Or put it this way...

Isn't it interesting that Progressives who favor centralized control over guns, schools, health care, etc. favor individual choice in church beliefs and practices.
The pot should not be calling the kettle black.

White Methodist Privilege?

55% of the UMC are in the US but the US has 70% of the bishops.
Let the African bishops lead for once.
