False equivalency

Do the math: 10 =/= 80; 10< 80. And those anonymous 80 are the tip of the iceberg of the right-wing satrapy within the UMC funded by NeoFundamentalist groups like the Insttitute on Religion and Democracy and ... Pittsburgh zillionaire Richard Mellon Scaife. Those ten are gentle angry people but if they get out of hand security could escort them away. The falsehood "both sides are equally to blame" is like saying the presence of an ant is just the same as if a tiger comes into your backyard.

Bullying

I do feel that I am not a bully-er, not driving the UMC toward disaster when I say that I would be glad for a 2-quadriennium system of local option. I.e.,that each congregation declare itself on the subject of LGBTQ inclusion at all levels and that Bishops agree that they will not send to any congregation a pastor opposed to the congregation's conviction. If, in 8 years nothing has changed, then another method or at ion might be considered. I would rather that the whole church understood and accepted my point of view, but I don't have the right to make that happen. However, we have far more important things to do than to fight about this issue. There are children to help, neighbors to love, hungry people to teach to fish, and mosquitos to pursue. These are the things John Wesley wanted us to do and examples of our love of God, and we need to do them and do our best to live with one another. If you call me a bully for this, then perhaps I do not understand your use of the word. The ONLY thing that is no debatable is the discriminatory language of the Discipline, which must be removed. There should be no place for any hateful language anywhere in the rules, traditions and policies of the United Methodist Church. THEN, we can work on getting along with one another. Does that make me a bully? I respectfully submit that if you think so, then you are in error.

You have an interesting plan

I would have no problem with individual churches deciding whether they will take a walk on the side of the oppressed or the side of the oppressor.

GLSEN has a new emblem that's a rainbow colored paper doll named "Allie Ally." They also have one rainbow colored sticker that says "Safe space," which I've used on my office door as a therapist to show LGBT clients I will not knowingly harm them. Just have the pastors of the safe churches post one of those or some variation therof on their office doors.

When I hear of the recalcitrance of the right-wing of the UMC it reminds me of a line from Sheri Reynolds' novel "The Rapture of Caanan" about a teenaged girl growing up in a fundamentalist cult. Toward the beginning she said "I used to think of our church as a refuge, but now I see it as an island...an island sinking under the weight of fearful hearts."

Bullying

The language in the BoD must not be changed as it is in harmony with scripture. That is not debatable. Accept that and then we can get along.

It would be....

..."in harmony with scripture" if it also prohibited wearing of mixed fabrics and eating shrimp. since it does not, it is merely a statement of ignorant bigotry and needs to go.

It is

The old shellfish argument. How quaint. I thought Acts 10:15 sort of settled that. Our BoD statement has been approved and reaffirmed by GC over and over. Referring to those delegates as ignorant bigots is probably not your best conversation starter.
