Varied United Methodist ministries continue to issue statements pledging inclusivity of LGBTQ people in their activities. The most recent comes from the Pacific Northwest Conference's Camping Board of Stewards:
"In light of the recent 2019 Special Session of General Conference, the Pacific Northwest Camping Board of Stewards would like to clearly state that we fully accept all persons identifying as LGBTQIA+ into the life, ministry, and activities of our four campsites. Whether you are staff, camper, clergy, volunteer, visitor or anyone using Indianola, Lazy F, Ocean Park or Twinlow, we welcome you!
"As with the church, we are a work in progress and going forward we are taking, and have taken, steps to make our four camps more inclusive settings for all people. And please know that we are always open to suggestions for improvement when we fall short. Thank you for your openness, understanding, and support of our four camps!"
The statement was signed by Peter Fraser, Chairperson, PNW Camping Board of Stewards, and Alan Rogstad, PNW Executive Director of Camping & Retreat Ministries.
Two kinds of religion
PLANO, Texas — The Rev. Don Underwood, senior pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, divides religious expression into two camps. One views everything in absolutes and black and white, while the other embraces diversity of understanding and acknowledges that biblical interpretations evolve over time. He writes that the clash of ideology between these two camps illustrates The United Methodist Church's ongoing divide over homosexuality.
"I unapologetically espouse the second kind of religion because I believe it leads to a deeper and more resilient faith," Rev. Underwood wrote. "The presence of real suffering in life challenges any simplistic understanding of God’s will. There are times when we face moral or ethical choices that defy easy black-and-white answers. As we grow older, and hopefully wiser, we look back on our journeys and acknowledge the many times we thought we were right but, in fact, we were wrong. The mysteries of the universe and the challenges of everyday life have moved us in the direction of humility rather than certainty."
