As one who has personally dealt with same-sex attraction, I agree with Patterson that God's word has been relegated by many in the UMC to lesser status than Wesleyan principles. It must be pre-eminent. When Cain was dealing with anger (emotion) at God and his brother Cain, God warned him "Sin is crouching at your door. It wants to have you. You must master it." People in the U.S. today have been overwhelmed for almost a century by Satan's lies and the rise of a "feelings are the basis of truth" mentality. Same-sex attraction has a sinful root of a deep desire. All sinful desires must first be acknowledged in order to allow God to heal us.
