Why I Left

I belonged to a vibrant and welcoming UMC congregation. There were many same-sex couples in the congregation, and there were great opportunities for people of all orientations to gather and serve. Then, our minister became obsessed with violating UMC policies on same-sex marriage, and each week became a barrage of messages about how our congregation would separate from the UMC if necessary to pursue that vision (membership be damned). The mission of salvation and spirituality was thrown to the wolves in favor of a radical stance of "social justice" (that the minister self-defined for the congregation). I left the UMC over that, just as I left the Roman Catholic church when weekly sermons became an incessant rant about the evils of abortion. I am of equal-opportunity when it comes to "voting with my feet". When a church is overtaken by zealots pushing their self-defined social issue, I'm outta there!
P.S. The UMC that I left has closed due to defections, so I am not alone.

"A pandemic is not a judgment, and it will not discriminate between the deserving and the undeserving. I think moments like this reveal to me God’s unbelievable love for us. ... We’re learning right now in isolation what interdependence feels like and what a gift it is, and the more we’re apart the more we realize how much we need each other. "

– Religion historian Kate Bowler of UMC-related Duke Divinity School, profiled in the April 6, 2020 New York Times.

"This is our new 9/11 in New York." — New York Area Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton

"If New York and New Jersey were nations, New York would be No. 5 in the world and New Jersey would be No. 8 in terms of the number of cases."

— Greater New Jersey Area Bishop John R. Schol
