Why I Left

I belonged to a vibrant and welcoming UMC congregation. There were many same-sex couples in the congregation, and there were great opportunities for people of all orientations to gather and serve. Then, our minister became obsessed with violating UMC policies on same-sex marriage, and each week became a barrage of messages about how our congregation would separate from the UMC if necessary to pursue that vision (membership be damned). The mission of salvation and spirituality was thrown to the wolves in favor of a radical stance of "social justice" (that the minister self-defined for the congregation). I left the UMC over that, just as I left the Roman Catholic church when weekly sermons became an incessant rant about the evils of abortion. I am of equal-opportunity when it comes to "voting with my feet". When a church is overtaken by zealots pushing their self-defined social issue, I'm outta there!
P.S. The UMC that I left has closed due to defections, so I am not alone.

"I absolutely hate these trials. And I'm convinced that they will be the ruin of the United Methodist Church unless we can somehow come to recognize that the American church deserves the same kind of contingency that the Central Conferences enjoy."
